I am the principal of Gary Thomas Proprietary Limited and a:

  • Fellow of Chartered Accountants, Australia & New Zealand

  • Fellow of The Tax Institute, and a

  • Chartered Tax Adviser.

I predominantly take referrals from accounting and legal firms and work either directly with the client or through the firm – whichever is preferable. In many cases this leads to repeat engagements with those clients and the referrers.

I have worked in public practice since 1979, first as a partner in my own general practice and then as a senior partner with Findex (formerly Crowe Horwath) for 20 years. Since 2005, I have specialised in tax advisory services, tax risk management and the management of controversies. My own advisory practice has been in operation since January 2023.

I am one of the founders and a proud member of the Regional Tax Advisory Network, an affiliation of like minded tax professionals that support each other in the delivery of high level services.

Tax Advice and Opinions

I provide advice and opinions on taxation matters impacting businesses and individuals. This includes assistance with major transactions and the acquisition and disposal of business assets.I have a particular interest in complex areas of taxation law, matters relating to Trusts and Estates, and Capital Gains Tax issues.

Management of Controversies

Tax audits, amended assessments, discovery of errors and other troubling controversies can be very difficult to manage. I have extensive experience in assisting taxpayers with such issues and in dealing with the Australian Taxation Office on their behalf.

General Business Consulting

Whilst I mainly deal with taxation issues I also provide general business consulting services, drawing upon my 40-plus years in public practice. With such an extensive professional background, there isn’t much I haven’t seen in the privately owned business space.
